ABOUT BATTLE CREEK COALITION FOR TRHT
ABOUT BC TRHT
BCTRHT is a crucial part of the national Truth Racial Healing and Transformation (TRHT) initiative, initiated and generously supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. This initiative, launched in 2016, is dedicated to addressing the deep-seated historical and contemporary impacts of racism and striving to bring about lasting and transformative change. Our vision is to see Battle Creek flourish as a community where all individuals can enjoy a shared humanity, and our mission is to act as the catalyst for a racial equity movement in Battle Creek, Michigan, reshaping the way we live, work, and interact as a community.
Theory of change
Through its work, community members will take ownership of TRHT principles and weave them into the fabric of the community; embedding TRHT in all aspects of the work completed independently and in collaboration with one another.
Our Values
Authentic Relationships
We seek opportunities for deep connection and trust by embracing vulnerability and discomfort, honest dialogue, and practices rooted in love and abundance.
Justice
We pursue and promote a culture of fairness, equity, integrity, and accountability throughout our processes and partnerships.
Anti-racism
We are committed to the necessary work of identifying, discussing, and dismantling racism and the hierarchy of human value based on race.
Respect
We show consideration for one another in words and actions, and maintain an environment that honors diverse traditions, heritages, languages, and experiences.
Curiosity, Learning & Growth
We are embarking on our own respective, iterative, and organic journeys toward liberation that are continually evolving. We spark inspiration and motivation for others to join us on this evolutionary path toward change.
Truth
We document and share real, complete stories and express individual experiences. We insist on lifting complex and historically hidden narratives that may challenge long-standing, dominant perspectives.
Compassion, Empathy & Healing
We acknowledge and appreciate one another’s perspectives, situations, pain, and self-determination. We intentionally incorporate opportunities and spaces for healing in our practices and processes.
Lived Experience
We value, honor, and affirm the leadership and voices of those who experience racism, discrimination, prejudice, and marginalization because of their racial and ethnic identities.
Courage
We dare to go down new roads, challenge traditional notions of what is true, disrupt patterns, and create brave spaces for truth telling and vulnerability.
Historical Context Matters
We dare to go down new roads, challenge traditional notions of what is true, disrupt patterns, and create brave spaces for truth telling and vulnerability.
