One Kind Message Away

Part of the Isa’s Corner series: reflections on belonging, identity, and community in Battle Creek.
Three weeks ago, I was seated in a study room at KCC, trying to study for a test. But I found myself more-so trying to minimize distractions. I wasn’t feeling fueled or as motivated as I’d liked to have been. It felt like it was freezing even though the thermostat displayed a steady 70 degrees. A 20-minute impromptu conversation when a friend walked in, anxious nail-biting, and multi-tasking on different assignments all led the first half of this study session to be unproductive.
A pop-up notification came in through my student account. Thinking it was another assignment I had to complete, I paid it no attention. However, that loud ding has conditioned me to be interested. And like most of us would’ve, I caved and clicked on the email. When I opened it, I saw that it was from a professor who had been meeting with me to discuss my transfer plans to Europe to finish my degree. This professor is knowledgeable in this field and cares to put in the effort to email me and send resources as she guides me through this process.
I chose to attend a 2-year institution with my goal of transferring to Europe in mind. My plan was to avoid the harsh financial commitments, distractions, and challenges that would’ve arisen at a 4-year institution. I would not be as confident about my decision to stay local if it were not for the resources, guidance and care she gives me.
This email cut through all the noise in my head, in a way that I didn’t expect. I took a long breath and smiled once I had seen the effort she had poured into researching and helping me achieve my dreams by sending me resources and schooling options. On a day that felt rushed and unproductive, I was able to take a breath and reground myself in my studies. Her message made me think about how many people walk around, one kind word away from feeling steady again. Through the stress, I found gratitude because I am taking steps toward achieving my educational goals. My professor added fuel to my flame of motivation and kept me grounded in gratitude.
This reminded me that through community connection, we can all be there to support and uplift one another. This month, I want to be kinder to others by being a listening ear or providing care when in a time of darkness. In addition, I want to be kinder to myself with the words I choose to tell myself and the amount of pressure I put on myself.
Isa’s Corner is a storytelling series exploring belonging, identity, and community through the reflections of a young leader growing and learning in Battle Creek.
